About Me

I am a baby boomer female nearing the end of the child-rearing portion of my life. In 2005, I agreed to assist my husband and his sister with relocating their parents to their home in Florida. My husband and I were not married long and I did not know his family at all really.

I was told that Dad had early Alzheimer's but Mom was fine. She was 79 and he was in his early 80's.

Before they could open their home in Florida, there was deferred maintenance that had to be done first. Since my husband has a rather all-encompassing career and could not possibly take the time to do it himself without it jeopardizing his business, I volunteered. Not that I wasn’t working also—I had a full-blown real estate career. My schedule was just more flexible than his. And with my real estate background, I could certainly fix up a house!

Finally, the day was here. After making travel arrangements for all (including a cat), my husband and I hopped on a plane and flew to Connecticut to escort his parents to their Florida home. The plan was to visit with them for a few days in Connecticut, bring them to Florida, and then return home ourselves to our own lives.

When we all arrived in Florida, my life changed forever. After about twenty-four hours of observation, I realized that these people could not do anything for themselves. They were not "all right". Their Florida home was not even safe for their physical condition.

My journey in getting through this is what prompted me to write this book. Rest assured that many hours of speaking with professionals, research, trial and error, and obtaining a CSA designation are what qualify me to pass this information on to you.

MEDICARE the BASICS

MEDICARE

When a person turns 65 they must apply for Medicare.

http://www.medicare.gov/basics/socialsecurity.asp

• Medicare is a federal health insurance program for the elderly and disabled.

• Medicare Part A covers hospital costs, and Part B covers doctor bills and other medical costs.

• There are deductibles, co-insurance payments, and limits to what Medicare will pay for.

• Most people also purchase a supplement medical insurance plan to pick up these Medicare deficiencies. These plans… Continue

HIRING CAREGIVERS

HIRING CAREGIVERS

Arranging full time home healthcare can be a continuous nightmare. People come and go, don't show up for work, their kids get sick, and on and on and on. Let an agency supply your help in this situation. If an assigned caregiver cannot come to work for some reason, they can send someone else out immediately to cover the shift. To find one, look under Home Health Agencies in the phone book.

My recommendations for hiring caregivers: Be wary of hiring someone that has small chi… Continue

Caring For the elderly at home and SUPPORTIVE CARE OPTIONS

SUPPORTIVE CARE OPTIONS

or

“OTHER PEOPLE THAT CAN HELP OUT”

Supportive care options may include facilities and/or programs to which your senior can go to, such as a senior center or adult day care program. If your Mom/Dad mainly needs company and activity while you work during the day, a senior center may be the answer.

In a typical program, either you drop off your senior, or they will pick them up at about 9 a.m. They will be driven to a facility where they will socialize, have lunch, eng… Continue

Senior health Care and general lighting issues

Excerpt from GENERAL LIGHTING

Seniors eyesight gets poorer as they age and they require more light to see well. Use high-wattage bulbs in light fixtures around the home, especially where they read. 3-way bulbs are great.

Remember from the Bathroom section that the rocker-type wall switches are the easiest for seniors to use. Second are the old-fashioned toggle switches.

NIGHT LITES

This is mandatory! Many elders fall while attempting to use the restroom or find the kitchen during the night… Continue

Elderly Home Care and The Bathroom set up

THE BATHROOM

Without having to retrofit a bath with specially-designed tubs and lifts for seniors that have difficulty moving, there are some basic mandatory safety issues that must be addressed. Innovative and attractive products are now on the market.

THE TOILET

Toilet height is important. Your elder’s leg strength may become compromised at some point. Even a slight muscle strain can prevent them from putting pressure on a leg. This makes it difficult to rise off a toilet. The higher the… Continue
