"Designing for Better Health" Competition

Earlier this week I received an email from Roberto Wohlgemuth, Global Media Manager at Ashoka's Changemakers. He was drawing my attention to a new online competition they are launching in collaboration the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Basically, the Designing for Better Health competition is part of a search for innovations that are helping people to make better decisions regarding their own health and the health of others. This is part of a global… Continue

Tufts Medical Center and BCBS MA Reach Agreement

I just received word that Tufts Medical Center and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts have reached an agreement on a contract that will enable Tufts Medical Center Physicians to continue seeing ALL Blue Cross Blue Shield members. This is welcome news after a week or more of concern over what the future would hold for Tufts patients covered by BCBSMA.

Kudos to Ellen Zane, President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center, for holding her ground. Nothing about that surprises me!… Continue

A Healthcare Marketing Blog with Attitude

I recently connected with Eric Hayward of Grossman Design through this Healthcare Marketing Community. Eric moderates a blog called Our Haus ( that dedicates a significant percentage of its posts to healthcare marketing. I like the attitude and the thinking that I've seen in Eric's posts. It is a fledgling effort, with only 8 posts in 2008. But with 6 posts so far this… Continue

BCBS Massachusetts Big on Revenue, Not Patient Care

On January 9, 2009, there was an editorial in the Boston Globe detailing Tufts Medical Center's struggle to receive fair reimbursement rates from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Here's the straight scoop: Hospitals like Tufts that are not part of a larger healthcare system or network are at a disadvantage when negotiating with BCBS because they simply don't have the leverage. Because of its size,… Continue

Healthy Food Options and Healthy Hospitals

Yesterday I received a Google Alert for a great article on HealthLeaders Media website titled "Resolve to Help Employees Lose Weight." The article, by John Commins, details the steps that Lexington Medical Center is taking through its 'Better Choices' healthy food campaign to improve employee health.

The timing of this article could not have been better, given that Mark Shelley (director of marketing and advertising at Lexington Medical Center) and I are putting the finishing touches… Continue

It's Monday. My first day back in the office after the holidays. And let me tell you, 2009 is taking off like a rocket! Here's what my first day back in the office looked like:

* I started out by editing and then submitting an article that I've co-authored with Brooke Hynes of Tufts Medical Center for publication in the newsletter of the New England Society for Healthcare Communications (NESHCo). The piece in on the subject of hand hygiene… Continue
