Today I am attending the 17th National Healthcare Marketing Strategies Summit (#HCMS12 for those of you on Twitter). When I attend these conferences, I want to meet smart, innovative people. It also helps if they are interesting and fun to hang out with.

Here's a list of people I think you ought to meet at this Summit. In creating this list I realized that I need to reintroduce myself to a couple of them. These are really smart people. Some I've just met, some I've known for years.…

Video: Single Best Thing You Can Do For Your Health

Dr. Mike Evans, founder of the Health Design Lab at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto, and a staff physician at St. Michael's Hospital, answers the question "What is the single best thing we can do for our health?" ESPN and Hand Hygiene

Over the years I've written a ton of posts about hand hygiene. I'm passionate about it. I've develop hand hygiene campaigns, spoken on the topic at healthcare conferences, written articles about it, and was even quoted in USA Today in a story about the H1N1 or swine flu where I discussed the importance of hand hygiene to help…

Pharmaceutical Companies on Twitter

‘Tweet us about your headache!’ Do you follow and interact with pharmaceutical companies on Twitter? These days everyone and their dog is on Twitter yet the pharmaceutical industry has mostly been reluctant to join.

Understandably this is in part because of the lack of clear guidelines from the FDA. However, a…

The World's Kindest Cancer Center

That's right - on the cover of Duke Medicine's Connect magazine the institution proclaims that its new cancer institute is the "world's kindest." Interesting. Duke has always owned the high tech/advanced medicine position in the region, hands down. They are a national and international powerhouse. But through its marketing Duke has continually…

Our On-Demand World and Healthcare Marketing

Broadcasters know exactly what you are recording and exactly when you watch a show on your DVR (digital video recorder). Besides any privacy queasiness, why should you care?

Two reasons: 1) You need an accurate count of how many people actually see your TV spots -- and 2) More importantly, you need to capitalize on the new on-demand consumer.

Here is a great…

Shooting Doctors

Earlier this week I supervised a photo shoot for one of my firm's hospital clients in the Boston Metro. We were taking shots of physicians that will be used in an upcoming ad campaign (digital, print and transit). I'm always intrigued by the process involved in creating advertising. For me, it never gets old. Whether it is TV, radio, print or digital, the work that takes place behind the scenes is extraordinary. Most people have no idea how involved the process can be. I thought I'd share…

Digital Airport Ads Promoting Hospitals

While traveling from Raleigh-Durham to Boston on Easter Sunday, I came across these digital airport ads in one of the terminals at Raleigh-Durham International Airport. They all promote hospitals in the region: WakeMed, Duke and the East Carolina Heart Institute. I also saw ads for the Duke Cancer Institute and the North Carolina Cancer Hospital - although I wasn't quick enough to capture those on video. Evidently, digital airport advertising is very popular with hospitals. That's because it…
