A young healthcare marketer in New England recently asked me for advice regarding career development. After we spoke, it came to me that the nuts and bolts of our conversation would probably be useful to others in the field. With that in mind, I put together this blog post. Please know that this is not comprehensive in nature. It is merely meant to give readers a good starting point on a career development path. With that said, here are 10 professional development tips for young healthcare…

There are now so many healthcare marketing and healthcare social media conferences that I have trouble keeping them all straight. Well, here's news about another one. I was speaking with Ben Dillon at Geonetric last week and he mentioned that he is leading a workshop at the Social Media & Mobile Technologies for Healthcare Conference. It takes place in Chicago, July 25-27, 2011, and…

One of my challenges as a marketer is that I become very close to the brands and organizations my firm promotes. My attachment continues long after our formal relationship has ended (yes, I've come to understand that all client relationship eventually come to an end). I worked with UNC Health Care for nearly 14…

I have to admit that I am intrigued by this extreme couponing phenomenon. For the uninitiated,
Extreme Couponing is a new hit show on TLC. It is amazing to see someone buy $1,000 worth of groceries for $8.28. Wow. If you haven't seen it, here's how TLC promotes the show:
"Enter the world of bargain shoppers who have mastered the art of saving! In Extreme…

As I always do, I took a few photos while attending the NESHCo Spring Symposium earlier this week in Portsmouth, NH. Most of the photos are from the annual awards dinner. The event was really special this year because we had representatives from three of our client hospitals sitting with us at the dinner. It was wonderful to watch them go up and accept their awards throughout the evening. In all, Jennings clients took home eleven (11) Lamplighter Awards for marketing excellence in healthcare.…

One of the things I love about the NESHCo Spring Symposium is that it has a different feel than other conferences I attend throughout the year. Granted, each is unique; but this one has more of a festival feel and I like that! It's the people who make the difference.
One of the special moments from the 2011 NESHCo Spring Symposium was a jam session that broke out yesterday afternoon when the day's sessions had concluded. Kevin Robinson of Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (on…

On Appature's blog they recently published an interesting infographic about Twitter in Healthcare: http://www.appatureinc.com/blog/twitter-in-healthcare/. l found out about it when I received a tweet congratulating me for making the "Most Influential Tweeters in Healthcare" list. To be honest, I had no idea there was such a thing - but I was excited to see that I was in such good company! Some of the people on the…

May is Melanoma Awareness Month. My co-worker, Barri Burch, sent me a link to this powerful video: "Dear Sixteen Year Old Me." The video is striking. Imagine Melanoma survivors and the spouses of those lost to the disease sending a message to their 16-year-old self. What would they say? The film was produced by The David Cornfield Melanoma Fund. Any adjectives I could use to describe it at this point would be trite. Just check it out for…

(Warning: This might be more about me than you really want to know.)
Today I am confessing that in many ways I am still old school. It is not a pretty thing. This is particularly true when I reflect on my role as an employer. Running a marketing firm, I take part in hiring lots of people - often young people. I understand that I'm not the only person to notice a trend where many of the young people coming out of school feel entitled and have what I consider to be unrealistic…

Okay, I admit upfront that at times I can be easily agitated. So take this post with a grain of salt. Here are 5 practices that I regularly see on Twitter that absolutely drive me crazy! (Of course, a more positive way to look look at this list is to call it "5 Bad Habits to Avoid on Twitter."
- Tweets that contain lists like: "5 Twitter Habit that Irritate Me." This has become so trite! Just today I saw the following: "5 keys to promoting your business…
