Caregiver's Resource Helpline: When you don't have time to search online!

Today, one (1) out of four (4) adults are coping with responsibilities of caring for an aging parent, disabled spouse or elderly loved one. Unprepared, their biggest challenge is finding local resources, support and services. Caregivers need solutions to meet immediate concerns or crisis involving their family member.

Even if one had the time to go online to search for local resources, you’ll experience…

Meet the REI of Hospitals

A colleague and I were doing focus groups in New England last week and conducting brand association exercises with female healthcare consumers. We asked the participants to compare various hospital brands to well known retail stores. This is a classic brand association exercise. So, for example, does a given… Continue

A Sampling of National Ads for Hospitals

Over the course of my travels, I tend to clip hospital print ads as I discover them. This time, my source was the October 2010 issue of US Airways magazine. I thought I'd share with you the ads I found. What I found interesting about this collection of ads is just how dramatically they vary in quality. (Please know that these are scans so the image quality is not comparable to the original.)…

Service Industry Advertising Awards Early Entry Deadline: October 29

The deadline for entering the 8th Annual Service Industry Advertising Awards (SIAA) is rapidly approaching. I like entering healthcare clients in this awards competition because it has specific categories for advertising promoting hospitals, health systems and physicians. And each entry is only $30 if you enter… Continue

My Video Interview at SHSMD: Hive Marketing & Social Media

On the afternoon of the last day at this year's SHSMD Conference, my friend Craig Gagnon of the Gagnon Partnership interviewed me about social media and Hive Marketing. This was essentially the topic of my presentation at the conference. Craig attended my presentation and was gracious enough to ask me to participate in a video interview for his Upstream blog (… Continue

GE Healthcare's "What the Health?" Videos

"Funny videos. Serious answers." That's how GE Healthcare sets up its series of three videos that "take a humorous look at the cost, quality and access challenges hospitals face every day." GE brought in the Second City Comedy troupe to serve as talent in the spots.

I appreciate what GE tried to do with these spots, but I'm not sure they accomplished their objective. They make GE's clients - the hospital administration and service line leadership - look like morons. Yes, the spots… Continue

AHRQ Patient Involvement TV Campaign

My amazing wife recently called my attention to a TV campaign by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). I'm not sure if the campaign is new, but this is the first time it has gotten my attention. The spots are interesting and the message is right on. They aren't the best executed spots I've ever seen, but I applaud them for the effort. They are trying to encourage patients to ask questions when they are with their physician.

The AHRQ says that its objective for these… Continue

Lee Aase Presents at VSHMPR: Social Media in Healthcare

Terrific presentation this morning by Lee Aase of the Mayo Clinic today at the Virginia Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations (VSHMPR) Conference.

"This openness and level of communication is not going to change."
Lee's message: If the values of your organization are not aligned with this, then your values need to change. This is the new reality!

If you'd like to view Lee's presentation, he posted it to SlideShare at… Continue

Physicians Adopt Smartphone Technology But Face a Mobile Disconnect

I vaguely remember the days when the only way to check my email was to log on to my computer. It seems to be a distant memory. With the invention and adoption of smartphone technology, more and more Americans (including me) are connected to the Internet all the time, with their laptops nowhere in sight. Physicians are also embracing smart phone technology, however two-thirds of doctors using the phones can’t connect them to a practice or hospital EMR. According to a study released by the PwC… Continue

Waiting for Wings - A Powerful Voice for Breast Cancer Awareness

Tonight I had one of the more moving experiences that I've been through in some time. I attended Lexington Medical Center's annual Women's Night Out fundraiser for the hospital's cancer care fund. It is also a celebration of breast cancer survivors (many were among the 500 attendees) and their families. Heidi Marble, a breast cancer survivor and author was the featured… Continue
