Medical Practice Marketing Tip of the Month

Now that over 150 million American Internet users are looking for healthcare information online, just having a website is no longer enough. To make your website work for you, avoid these five common design and development mistakes:

Slow-Opening Home Page – If it takes longer than 3 seconds to open, it’s too slow by today’s web standards. Avoid complex moving imagery and long content that forces the user to scroll to read it all.

Too Much Text – We live in a bullet-point,…

Video Post: The Role of Online Video in Healthcare Marketing

This is the third video in this series - all filmed using my flip camera. The subject of this video is the role of online video in healthcare marketing. One of the topics I address is the need to make physician finders more relevant and helpful to prospective patients and family members. One way to do that is through the infusion of video. Let the patients meet the physicians online. Enjoy. One caveat: I shot this video on my back porch. It was just me. No crew. No lighting. No director. No…

Video Post: Healthcare Marketing as Community Building

Another video in the series.

Background: A couple of weeks ago I was in the mountains of Virginia working on my book. While I was up there, my staff asked if I would record a few short videos addressing points from the infographic we published a few months ago: What's Missing From Most Healthcare Marketing Programs? (See infographic below). This video from the series shares my vision of healthcare marketing as community building. We need to come to a…

The Missing Voice in Healthcare Marketing

I'm on vacation this week so my blogging will be at a minimum. However, I do have a few videos I'd like to post. A couple of weeks ago I was hiding out in the mountains of Virginia, all alone, working on my book. While I was up there, my staff asked if I would record a few short videos addressing points from the infographic we published a few months ago: What's Missing From Most Healthcare Marketing Programs? (See infographic below). So I sat out on the deck of my mountain retreat…

Under the Sea: Vidant Health's Amazing New Children's Hospital

Today my team and I are working at Vidant Health in Greenville, North Carolina to launch their amazing new children's hospital: The James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital. This hospital will serve a region the size of the State of Maryland. The attention to detail in this nautically-themed facility is spectacular. Everywhere I look there is something reminiscent of a seascape.…

Ragan's Health Care Summit for PR & Marketing Communicators

Screen Shot 2013-05-22 at 11.37.10 AM

Over the years I've developed a great relationship with the folks at Ragan Communications. I write for their Health Care Communications News and usually attend at least one of their conferences each year. Mark Ragan and his team do a really nice job with healthcare communications - particularly healthcare social media.

Coming up on July 23 in…

Affordable Care Act: "Let's Talk Cost" BCBS NC Commercial

This TV spot from BCBS of North Carolina intrigues me. It uses an infographic look (oh so popular) and give it life through animation. I also like the tone of the commercial. BCBS is taking issues that confuse the general population and is trying to create understanding by making very simple points. Of course, they don't mention their role in driving up the cost of healthcare, but this is about their agenda and communicating their perspective. The messaging is not balanced, but it is…

Video Clip From My 2013 PRSA Health Academy Presentation

Below is a video clip of the first 30 minutes of my presentation last week at the 2013 PRSA Health Academy. The subject of the presentation was "Using Blogs to Engage Female Healthcare Consumers." Tim Brennan of Tufts Medical Center was scheduled to be my co-presenter but got a bad case of food poisoning after eating in one of the local dining establishments. (Unfortunately, I selected the restaurant.) So, I flew solo. Enjoy the presentation.…

Infographic: What's Missing from Most Healthcare Marketing Programs?

Not long ago I was on an airplane and started making a list of the major elements that are missing from many hospital marketing programs. Those are the kind of things I do at 30,000 feet. I thought the list was going to become a blog post, but as it grew, I realized I wanted a more graphic presentation. That's when I decided an infographic was in my future. The…

A Day at the PRSA Health Academy: Shrimp, Mommy Blogs & Healthcare PR

I had a blast today attending and serving as a speaker at the PRSA Health Academy. It is always rewarding to meet other healthcare communicators and marketing professionals and to reconnect with old friends. The Word of the Day is Community

A few weeks ago I gave a talk at the 2013 Pelvic Health Conference in Denver, Colorado, and my focus was on the need for healthcare marketers to build communities of shared interest. These are niche online communities that give patients the opportunity to engage with others who are going through, or have gone through, similar circumstances. When you get a diagnosis, it is natural to want to seek out others who have faced the same set of challenges. Their experience and guidance can be…

What Does It Take to Become a Doctor: The Dedicated Doctor Infographic

"In 2006, in response to concerns of a likely future physician shortage, the AAMC recommended a 30 percent increase in U.S. medical school enrollment by 2015. This recommendation used the first-year enrollment of 16,488 students in 2002 as a baseline. A 30 percent increase would thus lead to 21,434 first-year medical students enrolling by 2015, an increase of 4,946 students." (Source: AAMC Report - Results of the 2011 Medical School Enrollment Survey)…

Uninsured and Unhealthy: New Infographic

This infographic depicts the health insurance woes of African Americans and Hispanics using data from the National Health Interview Survey of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, corroborated by data from the US Census Bureau. As a quick overview, in 2012, only 11.2% of non-hispanic Whites in the U.S. were uninsured. Meanwhile, 17.4% of non-Hispanic Blacks were uninsured; this was significantly lower than the 29.4% recorded for Hispanics. This infographic shows the general health…
