The Industry's Healthcare Marketing Idea Exchange

New To My Reading List: Books by ePatient Laurie Edwards

I love books - and I love reading. When I'm reading purely for pleasure (fiction), I typically download books to my iPad. However, for books related to my work (healthcare and marketing), I still like to have a hard copy. Those books live on the bookshelf in my office, allowing me to easily reference them when I'm working on a project or looking for inspiration. They are my treasures. If the end of days ever came, I'd have a hard time deciding which books to take with me. My iPad would come with me for sure (which reminds me that I probably should invest in a solar charger!). For those of you who know what a bug-out bag is, mine would be sure to contain a couple of my more prized books.

One of my favorite moments in any given week is when a new book arrives at my office from Amazon.com. For me, it's like Christmas. Today, two new books arrived. They are both by Laurie Edwards, a health journalist and award winning health blogger (www.achronicdose.com). She is also an ePatient living with chronic disease. I met Laurie recently as I was putting together an ePatient panel for the spring conference of the New England Society for Healthcare Communications (NESHCo). Laurie has agreed to be one of the panelists. The two books of Laurie's that I ordered are Life Disrupted: Getting Real About Chronic Illness in Your Twenties... (Walker & Co., NY, 2008) and In the Kingdom of the Sick: A Social History of Chronic Illness in ... (Walker & Co., NY, 2013). Both of these books are available in Kindle Editions. That's the more cost-effective and expeditious way to go. However, that is not the path I followed.

Timing is everything. And that is true when it comes to finding the time to read good books. This week I should be able to delve into these books on airplanes as I travel to and from various cities for client meetings. And with President's Day approaching, I have a three day weekend coming up where I can do some serious reading as I relax in the mountains in front of a roaring fire. Idyllic. Can't wait.
